Here’s what to expect
during construction

While we can’t predict everything the future holds, we can tell you what to expect when it comes to Lumos 100% Fiber Optic Internet.

As we build our network, we are committed to keeping you informed during our construction process. We’ll let you know who those people are in your yard, what those flags mean, when we’re going to start restoration, and, most importantly, when you can schedule installation of Lumos 100% Fiber Internet in your home.

Step 1: The evaluation stage

Before laying our fiber optic network, our team looks at factors such as demand, cost and complexity of building a network, the number of easements and permits required, among other factors.

Step 2: The design & utility pole process

This is when we design a plan for laying the fiber and identify where easements are required. Our team will also be locating and evaluating necessary utility poles and getting permission to access these poles.

Step 3: Construction scheduling begins

Once our design is complete and we have all permits required, we’ll add your neighborhood to our construction schedule. During this time, we will begin reaching out to you to let you know that we are starting construction soon and what to expect.

Step 4: Building your new fast fiber network

Once construction is ready to begin, you’ll start to see our contractors out in your neighborhood getting to work on building your new fiber network. This can be a multi-phase process, so you may see one crew tasked with burying conduit, while another crew will handle the installation of fiber optic cabling. To prevent damage, we’ll have utility lines marked by placing flags in yards. Keep in mind that we will be working in easements and may have to dig trenches, construct attachments on utility poles, and install enclosures on sidewalks as part of the build. When we complete our work depends on the size of your neighborhood and, of course, on the weather. We are all about speed at Lumos, so we will be out of your way as soon as possible.

Step 5: Hooking you up

When the construction process is complete, you’ll be notified that fiber internet is now available in your area and you can sign up for services. Once you sign up, we’ll provide you with details of your installation and you can get ready to experience internet built for the future.

Construction FAQs

To protect against damage during our construction process, utility companies will come by and mark where any existing public utility lines currently exist in the right-of-way through your yard. Rest assured, our construction crews will remove the flags once the network is complete.

Lumos is permitted to access designated utility easements or the right-of-way (ROW). The ROW is usually a strip of land running along the street, sidewalk, a rear lot line, or between two lots. While most homeowners maintain these ROW areas themselves, the City or Department of Transportation has access to a portion of your property and can grant Lumos access to it as well.

Of course! Please have no worries there. Once our construction team has completed the work, we will restore your lawn as quickly as weather permits.

We always assume that there may be private utilities located underground and take precautionary steps.

To avoid other utilities, the Lumos team drills approximately 36 inches below the surface using a surface-launched drilling rig. This method is trenchless and has minimal impact.

The Lumos team selects the least intrusive intersecting point for pedestal locations.
