Lumos-Lipes Scholarship to help prepare local students and communities to thrive in the digital economy

Initiative honors the 125th anniversary of Lumos serving the Alleghany Highlands and Ray Lipes’ retirement

Clifton Forge, Va. (May 27, 2022)—Lumos has created an endowed scholarship at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College, which has its main campus in Clifton Forge and the DSLCC Rockbridge Regional Center in Buena Vista, attracting students from the Alleghany Highlands and surrounding counties. The education gained as the result of this scholarship will unlock the potential of students, preparing them for success in today’s digital world and helping local communities thrive in the digital economy. The new scholarship is called the Lumos-Lipes Scholarship to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Lumos providing service to the Alleghany Highlands and in honor of Ray Lipes on his retirement as senior manager from Lumos after more than 46 years of service to both the company and the community. This scholarship will support first-generation college students and will be available to both high school graduates and nontraditional students who may have little financial support and whose GPAs are not high enough to qualify for merit scholarships. “We are delighted to name our new scholarship in honor of Ray Lipes, who has provided decades of service to both Lumos and the Alleghany Highlands community,” Lumos CEO Diego Anderson said. “Ray has shown his leadership skills time and time again in assisting with the expansion of Lumos’ 100% fiber-optic network, which serves the Alleghany Highlands. Lumos thanks Ray for his dedication to our company and to the entire community. “The Lumos-Lipes Scholarship demonstrates our commitment to the Alleghany Highlands community through our investment in outreach, social impact and equitable access to education,” Anderson said. “We look forward to seeing local community college students flourish in today’s digital world and to lead the community into future decades.” Lumos endowed the scholarship at $60,000 to ensure rolling scholarships can be awarded annually for a period of two years each. One scholarship will be given each year in the amount of $1,500 to a Talent Search participant or nontraditional student in one of the credit programs the college offers. The gift applies to tuition, books, approved resources for the selected student’s degree or program, and other expenses related to a student’s cost of attendance. The first recipient is Taylor Lipscomb, a student at Rockbridge County High School, who was honored last night at an awards ceremony in the high school auditorium. “We are so appreciative of the generous support from Lumos and honor a long-time supporter and volunteer of the college,” noted DSLCC President Dr. John Rainone. “Ray Lipes is a leader in this community and an incredible friend to the College.  We thank Lumos for recognizing his contributions.” “Even in 2022, affordability is still the number one barrier to college access for many students,” said Joe Hagy, executive director of the DSLCC Educational Foundation. “The new Lumos-Lipes Scholarship helps address this barrier, honors Mr. Lipes’ career of service and leadership in the Alleghany Highlands, and reaffirms the joint commitment of DSLCC and the Lumos Foundation in promoting open-access education and workforce training for all in our service region. We want to sincerely thank the Lumos Foundation and Ray for their partnership, friendship, and dedication to our students!” About Lumos Lumos provides ultra-high-speed fiber internet service, wall-to-wall Wi-Fi, voice and streaming services to nearly 200,000 homes and businesses in Virginia and North Carolina, where we’re known as NorthState.
